Patient and Family Experience

The NICoE clinical care model emphasizes both symptomatic and functional improvement in service member health. The NICoE team partners with the service member to evaluate the total force fitness – mind (spiritual, psychological, behavioral and social) and body (physical, nutritional, medical and environmental). The NICoE’s interdisciplinary approach facilitates the integration of multiple services and specialties into a single, yet comprehensive and richly collaborative, consultation. This enables the service member to play an active role in creating an empowering plan of action to achieve balance, optimum healing and personal well-being to develop the skills and techniques to use long-term.

If you will be joining us at the NICoE in the near future, please download The NICoE Patient Welcome Guide to learn more about our program and help you prepare for your time with us.

The NICoE also provides guidance for patients transitioning out of the military. Please download the Peer Support Transition/Mentoring Program Smart Guide to access helpful resources.

The NICoE Family Program

The Continuity and Family Services Program is a full life-cycle approach to care, beginning the moment eligibility is determined through discharge when the service member returns to their home station. While service members begin receiving specialized evaluation and treatment recommendations at the NICoE, their healing process has only just begun. The Continuity and Family Services Program plays a key role in fulfilling the clinical mission of the NICoE to provide targeted, individualized and consistent care, by bridging the gap between NICoE and the service member’s home station.

The Family Services Program is available to all families of service members in the NICoE program. Short‐term, solution‐focused therapies, done in individual sessions, marital sessions, group sessions and/or family sessions, will be offered as appropriate.

The NICoE also has a Spouses Group and Individual Family appointments. The Spouses Group is an informal support group that provides a nurturing, listening environment for NICoE spouses to share common experiences, collaboratively solve problems and receive support in their own journey as caregivers.  Individual family appointments that your children may attend include art therapy, nutrition and work with the service dogs.
